Can You Dry Clothes Outside on a Cloudy Day?
Yes, you can. Cloudy doesn’t mean you’re stuck inside. The clouds block some warmth from the sun, but they don’t stop evaporation. If the air’s dry and there’s a bit of wind, clothes will dry. The trick is knowing when cloudy is okay and when it’s not.
What Actually Dries Your Clothes
We tend to think “sun = dry clothes,” but the real work happens when water leaves the fabric and goes into the air. That’s evaporation. Sun helps by warming things up, but the air has to be able to take on more moisture—and that comes down to humidity and air movement. A dry, breezy overcast day can do that just fine.
So cloudy on its own isn’t the problem. It’s when cloudy teams up with high humidity or looming rain that you get into trouble.
When Cloudy Works
Go ahead and hang out if: humidity’s under 70% (ideally lower), there’s a light breeze, and no rain’s expected. A 10–20 km/h wind makes a big difference—it moves damp air away and brings in drier air. On a day like that, your clothes might take a bit longer than in full sun, but they’ll get there.
Thin stuff dries faster than thick stuff. On a borderline cloudy day, start with shirts and underwear. Save the towels and jeans for a sunnier, drier day if you can.
When to Skip It
Don’t bother if humidity’s above 70%—even with a breeze, drying will be painfully slow and clothes might still feel damp. And obviously, if there’s rain in the forecast, keep the laundry inside. Nothing worse than rushing out to rescue half-dry clothes when the storm hits.
The worst combo? Gray, humid, and still. No sun, no wind, air full of moisture. That’s when you’ll be bringing in damp laundry at the end of the day. Save yourself the hassle.
Quick Rule of Thumb
Cloudy + low humidity + wind = you’re good. Cloudy + high humidity or rain = stay inside. Check the conditions before you head out—our drying score tells you in one glance. And yes, clothes really can dry without sun—wind and dry air are usually doing the heavy lifting.
